Cookie Policy

This page explains the cookies Midlife Atlas sets and the other things the site keeps in your browser. It sits under our Privacy Policy, which covers everything we hold about you on our own systems.

Cookies, and the other kind of storage

A cookie is a small file a site asks your browser to keep and hand back on your next visit. Local storage does much the same job, but it stays in your browser and is never sent to us automatically. We use both, for different things, and this page covers both.

What we set

Keeping you signed in

When you sign in, our authentication provider sets session cookies so that you stay signed in as you move between pages, and so that a request to save a symptom entry can be recognised as yours. These are strictly necessary: without them an account could not work at all. They are cleared when you sign out.

If you never sign in, the site sets no cookies whatsoever. An anonymous visitor reading an article is not given one.

What the tools keep on your device

Every tracker, diary and builder can save your entries in your browser's local storage, but only after you choose “Save on this device”. That copy stays on the device it was made on, is never transmitted to us, and is not readable by us. It is also not backed up — clearing your browser's site data erases it permanently.

Separately, if you give an email address to download something, your browser remembers that address so the site does not ask you for it again the next time. That is a convenience stored on your device; the record of the signup itself is described in the Privacy Policy.

What we do not set

• Advertising cookies, and cookies that build a profile for targeting.
• Cross-site tracking of any kind, including tracking pixels and social media buttons that phone home.
• Analytics cookies — we do not currently run any analytics service at all.
• Anything that sells, shares or brokers your browsing to a third party.

Analytics

There is no analytics on this site today: no Google Analytics, no alternative, nothing counting you. If we add one, we will name it on this page before it goes live and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Consent

Strictly necessary cookies — the sign-in session — do not require consent, because the service you asked for cannot work without them. We do not currently set any cookie that does require consent, which is why you have not been shown a cookie banner. If that changes, a banner will appear, and declining it will not cost you access to anything you can read today.

Clearing it

Every browser lets you see and delete cookies and site data, usually under privacy settings, and you can block cookies for a site entirely. Clearing site data for Midlife Atlas signs you out and permanently erases any tool entries saved on that device — entries saved to an account are unaffected and will be there when you sign back in.

Each tool also has its own control for clearing what it has saved locally, which is the safer option if you only want to reset one of them.

Changes

We will update this page whenever what we set changes, and change the date shown at the top.
